In his second year of coaching for Dig In Baseball, Coach Duffy also returns for his 10th season this year[2013] as The Avalon School’s varsity baseball coach. It’s his second year as athletic director at the private Gaithersburg, MD school. In Avalon’s first nine years, Coach Duffy led the Black Knights to a 138-78-2 varsity record, and to six state championships, with three wins. Avalon, which typically graduates about three players each year, has produced nine college signings in its first six graduating classes, and one walk-on invite to an Atlantic Coast Conference school. In 2007, Coach Duffy helped form the Old Line Baseball Conference (OLBC), now with seven member schools, and this year serves as commissioner. He was named by his peers as OLBC’s 2010 and 2011 Coach of the Year.

“As Basketball Hall of Fame coach and player John Wooden said, ‘A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment.’ I believe young athletes gain confidence, higher levels of self-esteem, and a true love for baseball through positive feedback from parents, coaches and their teammates. Athletically, players develop at different rates, but the player’s effort is always noticed above his performance. I’m business-like about practices but I do believe fun is important. Teamwork, sportsmanship and friendship are important, too. Winning comes from great effort and a strong, positive attitude. I tell my players to question themselves everyday: ‘What have I learned? What have I done to improve myself and my team?’”
